Welcome to this week’s Urban Survival Newsletter, brought to you by SurviveInPlace.com and UrbanSurvivalPlayingCards.com.
This week, we’re going to talk about some updates on the Somali Terror group Al Shabaab, a couple of important lessons from the Deepwater Horizon disaster, news on the audio version of the SurviveInPlace.com course and news on the release of my newest book.
Al Shabaab update.
Within 24 hours of my newsletter last week that focused on the Somali Terrorist organization known as Al Shabaab, two New Jersey men were arrested in New York attempting to fly to Somalia to join Al Shabaab. According to their statements before arrest to undercover agents and after arrest, they wanted to go kill Americans, but would be willing to do it here too.
I don’t care to dignify them by restating their names here, but there are a few interesting facts with these two. They were both Americans. One was born here and the other born in the Dominican Republic. Here’s the interesting thing. They hadn’t had any contact with terrorist organizations and were just flying over to Somalia with the hopes of joining up with one!
The DID fly to Jordan in 2007 and tried to enter Iraq, but ironically, they were turned away by jihadists.
These guys weren’t trained killers…they “trained” by playing violent video games, working out, and playing paintball. This doesn’t mean they were harmless. As Colonel David Grossman has researched and reported in “On Killing” and “Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill,” violent video games are an effective way to train the mind to be able to kill.
This brings up two important points that mesh with the Al Shabaab article last week.
First, there are an increasing number of leaderless, radical, self-trained cells and lone wolves popping up in the US. Some of them are watching for messages in the news and online, and other are simply adopting radical Islam and independent jihad against America as a twisted way to find meaning for their lives.
Many believe that leaderless, self-deployed threats are the biggest terrorist threat that the US faces. If it’s not the biggest, it’s definitely in the top 2 or 3.
Second, there is a 60 year plan in place by radical Islamists to impose sharia law in the US by 2050. They see this as a form of “soft jihad” or what we have referred to as a “velvet revolution.” Their plan is to do it both through converting Americans and by having LOTS of children until they have a large enough voting block to change our Constitutional law.
In fact, there’s debate on whether the hundreds of Islamic terrorists that are sneaking into the US are coming in to use guns and bombs or sow seeds for this slow destabilization and takeover of America.
Think it’s not possible? Look at England. The most recent numbers I can find show that there were 85 sharia courts in Britain. And since 2008, they’ve had the power to rule on Muslim civil cases.
Fortunately, concrete steps ARE being taken here in the US. Right now, it looks like “State Question 755” on the Oklahoma ballot this fall will specifically prohibit sharia law in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is just one state, but if the measure stays on the ballot, it will get a LOT of attention this fall and other states will hopefully follow.
On the surface, this just seems like random bad news. What’s the tie in to urban survival?
There’s a couple of tie-ins.
First, the fact that this plan is so widespread that it is not classified means that it’s safe to say that it is only a matter of time before some of these lone wolves pull off successful attacks. One takeoff of a popular saying in intelligence is that, “We have to be 100% right, 100% of the time. They only need one idiot to get lucky once.”
In addition to plain old accidents, this is why I go into so much detail on identifying and planning for chemical and biological threats in the SurviveInPlace.com course.
Second, the road to partial sharia law in Britain was full of mini riots and demonstrations. They still seem to be rioting every few days about something new.
In fact, in a related item, 9 people, including 5 policemen, were injured in “underpants riots” in Srinagar, India this week. Basically, people thought that underpants were being sold with a famous Mosque painted on them. In reaction to this, violent protests began around the city that included rioting and throwing stones.
The fact that the image was actually St. Paul’s Cathedral didn’t seem to matter. Interestingly enough, this fact didn’t cause a spontaneous riot of angry Christians. Go figure.
Ok…so you’ve got to admit that it’s kind of funny to have underpants riots. But the injuries were real, the damage was real, the anger was real, and this is NOT an uncommon occurrence.
As the number of radical Muslims increases and they start trying to impose sharia law, we’re likely to see more riots, demonstrations, and violence like we see everywhere around the world where radical jihad is trying to take over.
Deepwater Horizon & how it affects your 72 hour kits.
I want to start off by acknowledging that the Deepwater Horizon incident has been a series of disasters. I hope and pray that the Gulf states will be able to recover quicker than other areas that have endured similar oil spills in the past.
I’m going to tell you a few things that are happening with Deepwater Horizon that you may or may not know about.
The intent is not to be political or get you upset at Obama.
Here’s the point. Many people’s survival plan goes something like this, “If anything happens, I’ll be fine because “THEY” will come in with food, water, shelter, and security.”
This mysterious “THEY” is a group of awesome, highly skilled first responders who are, unfortunately, controlled by bureaucrats of all political persuasions in Washington who are completely incompetent. As a result, “THEY” may be slow in coming, if they are allowed to come at all.
We’re 53 days into the spill. Since the Federal Government hasn’t really responded yet, I guess we might want to change our thinking on 72 hour and 5 day kits. It looks like it would be smarter to start planning for 53 day kits since that seems to be the new benchmark for how long it’s going to take the government to respond to local/regional disasters.
That is, unless you count “looking for asses to kick” as a government response. To be fair, I wouldn’t even hold that statement against Obama. He was just silly enough to say out loud what DC politicians have been doing quietly for decades…look for someone to blame and take political advantage of it.
Not only that, but the administration has proudly claimed that it is in control and that BP can’t do anything without their blessing. So, as mad as people are at BP, keep in mind that their hands are tied by the Federal Government. Want an example?
On May 13th, BP successfully tested a centrifuge system that can remove between 97% and 99.9% of the oil out of 210,000 gallons of water per day WITHOUT adding chemicals to the water. I first heard about it on the 19th of May and figured they’d be deployed immediately.
The system was made by Kevin Costner at a personal expense of $40 million. He has built 300 of these devices of different sizes and is willing to donate them to the cause. (He only has a dozen or two of the larger models, but ALL 300 would help)
Parish presidents, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, local fishermen, and BP have been BEGGING the Obama administration to let them continue and expand the use of this PROVEN system for ALMOST A MONTH! This week, Costner even testified in front of Congress. Why Congress didn’t stop the hearings half way through Costner’s testimony and devote all available resources to deploying the 300 centrifuges is beyond me.
Again, blaming Obama or the current Congress for this completely misses the picture. Our government is, by design, inefficient and slow to move and different leadership would only change the response by degrees.
The takeaway here is that we should always expect this speed and level of response to local and regional disasters. It means that we need to prepare not only to take care of ourselves after a disaster, but also prepare to help first responders take care of others in your neighborhood & community.
In other words, YOU may end up being the “THEY” that your neighbors think will save them after a disaster.
Here’s another good lesson from the oil spill. Yesterday, I heard a report that said, “The oil spill just got worse…MUCH worse.” And then they went on to say that the original estimates of the amount of oil released was way too low. Again, this is horrible, but it doesn’t mean that the oil spill got worse.
The fact is that these updated numbers didn’t double the damage that has been done. It just meant that all the bean counters had to erase some numbers and replace them with bigger ones. It just goes to show that you MUST control your response to news, especially in a disaster or survival situation.
Always remember, the job of the news is to keep viewers attention long enough to watch commercials. It’s NOT to provide accurate information. It’s not to help you survive. It’s not to educate you. Although sometimes those are welcome bonuses. Their job is to get you to tune in as often as possible and watch as long as possible.
A couple of quick notes…The audio version of the SurviveInPlace.comcourse is complete! If you are or have been a student, the lessons are uploaded and available to you in the members’ area. If you haven’t signed up yet, I encourage you to join more than 2,500 others nationwide who have chosen to do what it takes to get themselves and their families ready for disasters and urban survival situations. Right now, the downloadable audio version of the course is available as a free bonus, but I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be offering that. To take advantage of this bonus right now, go to SurviveInPlace.com and get signed up today.
If you’ve been waiting to order the audio course on CD, we should have fulfillment and distribution set up within the next two weeks. I’ll let you know when it’s ready. As a note, I couldn’t find any “voice talent” who was a fellow prepper who could do it justice, so I am the voice of the audio book.
On one hand, I’m not a professional actor and don’t know all the fancy tricks of recording audio books. On the other hand, since I did the audio book, it meant that I added in personal stories, updates, and clarifications that aren’t in the print version yet. I think the added information and passion that I added will be well worth it for you.
As a note, if you’re an audio mixing guru, please get in touch with me. I’d LOVE to figure out how to make the files smaller and still sound good.
And finally, many of you have been waiting patiently for my book on bartering and negotiating after breakdowns in civil order. I’m happy to say that I sent it off last night to have several people review it and it should be available within the next week or two as well. Initial feedback has been VERY strong and I’m excited to be able to share this with you.
So, again, If you aren’t currently a SurviveInPlace.com student, I encourage you to get signed up today by going to: SurviveInPlace.com.
